- Anderson, Henry L. N., Ed.D., The Nature and Purpose of Disease: Definitive Guide for Peoples with Melanin
NOW! NOMINATED FOR NOBEL PRIZE!
Provides break-through conceptualizations that seriously bring into clear conflict earlier notions of ‘cause and effect (of disease),’ nutrition, the ‘purpose’ of disease, sinister elements behind the so-called “HIV/AIDS Pandemic,” why there has not been (and will never be) any “cure for cancer” (with the exception of prevention), and other shocking revelations. Publishers in Nigeria, Japan, Germany, India and the United States expect this book to be dominated for a Nobel Prize. The Foreword is by Fabienne Ouapou-Lena, MD, Ph.D., of the Central African Republic. Dr. Vivian Virginia Vetrano, long-time associate and understudy with Dr. Herbert M. Shelton and colleague of T. C. Fry writes an illustrious Introduction to the book.

- Anderson, Henry L. N., Ed.D., African, Born in America. Beverly Hills, CA 90212-7219: BLI Publishing, 1993.
-A sociopolitical autobiography, exploring the life-span realities of growing up under the domination of white people, particularly as experienced in America. A keenly perspective series of responses on issues reflecting answers to the question: “What have I become (What can I become?) in the context of American, white-dominated society?” No “Sacred Cow” is spared in this Job-like “confrontation” with real events and circumstances as experienced by this writer. Between these pages can be found real amelioration strategies for age-old “problems,” particularly self-identity and taking back control over personal health and well-being. Foreword by famed comedian and internationally known civil rights activist, Dick Gregory. This book has been twice “refused” registration by the U.S. Copyright Office, Washington, DC.
- Anderson, Henry L. N., Ed.D., No Use Cryin’
– This first novel (1960, 1967, 1992) presents a classic view of race relations in the American South prior to the US Supreme Court Decision of 1954, outlawing segregated seating on public conveyances, and providing the last ‘death blow’ to the notion of “separate but equal.” As a psychological drama, the novel gets behind the “Southern facade” and shows interracial relationships as they really were, including sex and/or marriage between the races.
- Anderson, Henry L. N., Ed.D., You and Race—A Christian Reflects
– A 1960’s guide to young people struggling to reconcile parental teachings about race and the unfolding dynamics in the real world. The book provides practical answers to youthful questions, from the reference of one who has committed himself/herself to the teachings of Jesus Christ. This small paper back book helped provide a big social platform for many youngsters in the Yale/New Haven-Norwalk, CT environments of the writer as a seminary student at Yale Divinity School.
- Anderson, Henry L. N., Ed.D., Revolutionary Urban Teaching
– A UCLA doctoral dissertation by-product that provides essential, common-sense guidelines for providing educational services to the children and families of peoples with melanin (“colored skin”). The dynamics of this 1973 publication are strikingly reminiscent of the ‘historic cancer of racism in America.’ The author draws an interesting parallel between the nature of the educational enterprise in urban America, for example, and the ‘character’ of the teacher education and curricula perceptions thrust upon inner city school children.
- Anderson, Henry L. N., Ed.D., Helping Hand: 8-Day Diet Programs for People Who Care about Wellness
– This classic (1986) book attempts to adjust ‘allowances permitted’ by Harvey and Marilyn Diamond in their first-of-its-kind bestseller, Fit for Life. The “Introduction” is written by T. C. Fry, Natural Hygienist and disciple of Dr.Herbert M. Shelton, Co-Founder of The American Natural Hygiene Society. The reader is actually guided through a common-sense transition from meat-eating and historic health problems to plant-based and live foods and exercise, and be on the road to an illness-free, robust and energetic quality of life. The author is a Natural Hygienist (fruitarian) and disciple of the late T.C. Fry, mentor to Harvey and Marilyn Diamond.

- Anderson, Henry L. N., Ed.D., Helping Hand: Guide to Healthy Living
– West African (Nigeria, 1990) edition of the classic first edition, Helping Hand (1986). Includes two additional and region-specific chapters, “Becoming Sick - Getting Well” and “Health in ‘Developing’ Countries,” including a quick sketch of the value of ‘therapeutic fasting,’ with instructions on how to begin and end a fast. Though the book advocates a rather ‘narrow’ program, nonetheless it provides realistic options for continental Africa, especially emphasizing purified drinking water.
- Anderson, Henry L. N., Ed.D., Ihre Gesundheit liegt in Ihrer Hand
– German language edition (1992), translated by Prof. Bert van Wingerden, Ph.D., Dean of the Graduate School of Life, Health and Environmental Sciences, and Chairman of the Department of Sports Physical Therapy, City University Los Angeles, Gennep, The Netherlands. The author was invited to give a series of lectures in Germany, but it was cancelled due to political unrest.
- Anderson, Henry L. N., Ed.D., Helping Hand: The American Diet
– This 1994 Japanese edition of 8-Day Diet contains all the transitional information translated and illustrated in the Japanese language. The Food Combining Hand Chart (© 1986 by the author) is clearly presented, showing recommended food mixtures that better conform to and support the body’s biological structure and systemic performance. The book seemed to fill a growing interest in Japan to reduce protein consumption, and experiment with proven alternatives.
- Anderson, Henry L. N., Ed.D., Organic Wellness Fasting Technique
– A practical guide to the most recommended “treatment modality” that one might employ in the restoration of health when it has been sacrificed due to incorrect consumptive behaviors (occasioned by ‘enervation,’ and the resulting disruption in the body’s eliminative activities). The book actually ‘teaches’ the reader how to initiate, carry out, and end a ‘therapeutic fast’ with safety, comfort and desired results.

- Diamond, Harvey and Marilyn, Fit for Life. New York, NY: Warner Books, Inc., 1985.
-Perhaps the most popular—and important—book of the 1980’s. Credited with spawning the worldwide “wellness consciousness movement.” Takes the wellness-conscious person, perhaps, 70% to 75% of the way to an optimum healthful living lifestyle. Mentored by T. C. Fry, the Diamonds cling closely to the basic precepts of Dr. Herbert M. Shelton and the Science of Natural Hygiene. Viewed by many as the best book available on the subject through 1985.

- Elwood, Catherine, Feel Like a Million. New York, NY 10018: Simon & Schuster, 1956.
-Good beginning book on nutrition. The book is clearly written for understanding.
- Fry, T. C., The Great AIDS Hoax. Austin, TX: Life Science Institute, 1989 (as revised).
-Important discussion on “the nature and purpose of disease,” such that serious questions are raised which, when answered, point to various other “causes of AIDS,” rather than those promulgated in the media! Dr. Fry decries “the phony notion of ‘contagion’” and “proves AIDS is unrelated to either sex or viruses.” Important for long-term drug users and other substance abusers who are now attempting to cleanse their systems through fasting techniques. More importantly, perhaps, the book is hauntingly frank in sharing research that confirms, “If you are not aware of what is causing your problem, you are likely to never uncover a solution.” The “message” is that medical research spending is, substantially, fraudulent.

- Hendler, M. D., Ph.D., and Sheldon, Saul, The Complete Guide to Anti-Aging Nutrients. New York, NY: Simon and Schuster, 1985.

- Hunter, Beatrice, The Natural Foods Primer. New York, NY: Simon and Schuster, 1972.
-A beginner’s guide to raw foods. Includes preparation tips. Sufficiently descriptive to preclude taking a simplistic view.
- Jensen, Bernard, D.C., N.D., You Can Master Disease. Solana Beach, CA: Bernard Jensen Publishing, 1976.
-Dr. Jensen has been in private practice since 1929 and has spent many years studying other cultures, lifestyles and eating habits. Through iridology he and his associates have developed “preventive therapeutics.” Fundamental to the onset of disease conditions is diet. Dr. Jensen asserts: “Americans do not eat enough of the right kind of foods. One family in ten has a good diet, less than four in ten have passable diets, and more than fifty per cent have poor diets. The lack of the proper nutritional education program in grammar school, (junior high or middle school), high school and college is one of the contributing causes to this dilemma.”
- Kaslow, Arthur L., MD, You Can Achieve Freedom From Chronic Disease. California: J. P. Tarcher, Inc., 1979.
-A self-care program based on Dr. Kaslow’s principles. Informative, very readable. Goes beyond nutrition, to form a truly wholistic program.
- Katahn, Martin, Ph.D., Beyond Diet. London, New York, NY 10110: W. W. Norton & Company, 1984.
-No diet is the way to go. Avoid “low calorie” foods. These two statements sum up the focus of this book.
- Kordel, Lelord, Eat and Grow Younger. New York, NY: World Publishing Company, 1962.
-Much ado is spent building a case for “powdered skim milk.” Arguments in this volume should give the reader pause for thought.
- Kugler, Hans, Slowing Down the Aging Process. New York, NY 10017: Pyramid Publications, 1975.
-Compilation of current studies and theories of aging. Section on diet and aging. Interesting and informative, but inconclusive perhaps.
- Maelstrom, Stan D., N.D., M.T., Own Your Own Body. New Canaan, CT: Keats Publishing, Inc., 1977.
-“Your body belongs to you—not to your doctor, not to the sellers and advertisers of the food, drink and chemicals it takes in. Only you can make sure that your body reaches and stays at the peak of the vibrant good health that makes life truly worth living.” Clearly, the author provides his own summary.
Passwater, Richard,
Supernutrition. New York, NY 10018: Simon and Schuster, 1975.
-An informative book by a biochemist, on the relationship of dietary deficiency to disease. He recounts some interesting evidence regarding low cholesterol. However, Passwater misses an opportunity to comprehend the true correlation between diet and disease; like others before him, the paradigm just appears too simple.

- Shelton, Herbert, N.D.,
Food Combining Made Easy. San Antonio, TX 78206: American Natural Hygiene Press, 1951.
-One of the leaders of the American Natural Hygiene movement summarizes his views of food combining. He includes a liberal amount of menus, which demonstrate the foci he describes. Easy to understand classification for foods, and detailed instructions on how to take your proteins, starch and on eating fruits. Also discusses vegetables or “a salad a day.” Dr. Shelton furthers distinguishes between ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ food combinations.

- Ibid., Vaccine and Serum Evils. San Antonio, TX: Dr. Shelton’s Health School, and Health Research (Mokelumne Hill, CA 95245), 1966.
-A very valuable book for mothers of small children, and for those traveling abroad, or those in service organizations who are “prevailed upon” to submit to the deadly practice of “a criminal operation…a filthy practice, born out of the ignorance and superstitions of the past and fathered by an ignorant impostor and fraud, palmed off on the world today as a scientific procedure.” Obviously, Dr. Shelton disapproves of any injection/s, for whatever reason or justification that might be advanced under ill advice at best.
- Ibid., Fasting for the Renewal of Life. Tampa, FL: American Natural Hygiene Society.
-Dr. Shelton gives scientific evidence how the body increases functions and eliminates symptoms in acute and chronic disease conditions. Also highly recommended for those concerned about “degenerative diseases.”

- Ibid., The Science and Fine Art of Fasting. San Antonio, TX: Willow Publishing, Inc., 1934 and Tampa, FL: American Natural Hygiene Society, 1978.
-Dr. Shelton explains the nature of disease, pointing out its relationship to toxicosis, and how the compilation of toxemia leads to so-called ‘degenerative disease’ conditions. He also provides guidance for those wishing to practice fasting as “a therapeutic way of life.”
Ibid., Getting Well. Modelumne Hill, CA: Health Research and American Natural Hygiene Society (Tampa, FL).
-An earlier book by Dr. Herbert M. Shelton, but one of his ‘classics’ on the hygienic system of living in harmony with the laws of nature to effect the optimum results of a healthful lifestyle, free of disease and debilitation. Once ‘the law of natural hygiene” is understood, Dr. Shelton makes clear the course for recovering from various ‘disease conditions.’

- Ibid., with Osward, Jean A., Fasting for the Health of It. Pueblo, CO: Nationwide Press, Ltd., 1983.
-Fascinating case studies of fasting and terrific results, from the March 1963 plane crash where two survivors lived for seven weeks just eating melted snow to the 58-year-old man who “had been taking thirty-five units of insulin daily for one year. On arrival his blood sugar level was 181. After his seven-day fast, his blood sugar dropped to 130 and he was able to control his sugar level without taking insulin.”
- Ibid., with Williard, Jo and Osward, Jean A., Natural Hygiene Weight-Loss Diet Book. New Canaan, CT: Keats Publishing, Inc., 1986.
-The dedication in this book is, perhaps, its most unique aspect: “To Herbert M. Shelton who revived and refined the philosophy and science of Natural Hygiene and who died on January 1, 1985, too soon to see this book in print.”
- Tilden, John H., MD, Toxemia: The Basic Cause of Disease (Abridged Edition). Tampa, FL: Natural Hygiene Press (A Division of American Natural Hygiene Society, Inc.), 1974.
-“In the process of tissue building—metabolism—there is cell building—anabolism—and cell destruction—catabolism. The broken down tissue is toxic and in health when nerve energy is normal, it is eliminated from the blood as fast as evolved. When nerve energy is dissipated from any cause, physical, mental or bad habits the body becomes enervated. When enervated, elimination is checked, causing a retention of toxins within the blood and tissues which we name toxemia.” A man plucked out from among us—in a sense, like Jesus was—dedicated his life to teaching the simple true he had been inspired to teach, actually dying in process of preparing further teachings. Dr. Herbert M. Shelton is said to have died from “enervation,” pressing to complete yet another book on Natural Hygiene, the science of healthful living in accord with Natural Law.
- White, E. G., Health and Happiness. Los Angeles, CA 90048: Audio Visual Production (first published in 1905).
-A unique treatment juxtaposing “holistic health principles” with passages from the Bible. A very interesting book for those who wish to draw “a religious connection” to the recommended principles of good health.
